In "The Gift of the Magi," a short story by O. Henry, a young couple in love, Della and Jim, find themselves facing a financial struggle just before Christmas. Wanting to give each other meaningful gifts, they make individual sacrifices. Della sells her beautiful hair to buy a chain for Jim's cherished pocket watch, while Jim sells his watch to purchase decorative combs for Della's hair. On Christmas Eve, they exchange their gifts, only to discover the irony of their actions. Despite the loss of their prized possessions, they realize that their love and selflessness are the most valuable gifts of all.
